HMRC estimates that £1.3 billion of pension tax relief went unclaimed over five years to 2022. Scottish taxpayers are disproportionately affected because Scotland's intermediate, higher, advanced, and top rate taxpayers all need to claim additional relief via Self Assessment — but many don't know this.
If your workplace pension uses “relief at source,” your provider automatically claims 20% basic rate relief from HMRC. But if you're a Scottish taxpayer paying more than 20%, the extra isn't applied automatically:
| Your band | Auto-claimed | You must claim |
|---|---|---|
| Starter (19%) | 20% | Nothing (you get a 1% bonus) |
| Basic (20%) | 20% | Nothing |
| Intermediate (21%) | 20% | 1% via Self Assessment |
| Higher (42%) | 20% | 22% via Self Assessment |
| Advanced (45%) | 20% | 25% via Self Assessment |
| Top (48%) | 20% | 28% via Self Assessment |
Register for Self Assessment at gov.uk. On your tax return, declare your pension contributions. HMRC calculates the additional relief and either reduces your tax bill or issues a refund. You can backdate claims up to 4 years.
