ISA vs SIPP — why it's a different decision in Scotland
Scottish taxpayers get higher pension tax relief than English taxpayers at the same salary. A Scottish Higher-rate taxpayer (42%) gets 42% relief on SIPP contributions vs 40% in England. This tips the balance further towards SIPPs in Scotland — but ISAs still win in some situations.
When the SIPP wins
The SIPP almost always wins if you're a Higher (42%), Advanced (45%), or Top (48%) rate taxpayer now and expect to be a Basic rate taxpayer in retirement. You get 42-48% relief going in and pay only 20% tax coming out. That's a guaranteed arbitrage.
When the ISA wins
The ISA wins if you're currently a Basic rate (20%) taxpayer and expect to be Basic rate in retirement too — the SIPP offers no tax advantage in that scenario, and the ISA gives you full flexibility to withdraw at any time. ISAs also win if you need access before age 57.
Can I have both?
Yes — and most financial planners recommend it. Use the SIPP for long-term retirement savings (especially if you're a higher-rate taxpayer), and the ISA for medium-term goals and as a flexible backup. Combined, you can shelter up to £80,000/year (£60k pension + £20k ISA) from tax.
