Funeral Support Payment helps people on low incomes meet the cost of a funeral for a close relative or friend. It covers a flat amount plus actual burial or cremation fees, and can also cover transport costs up to £700. You must be receiving a qualifying means-tested benefit at the time of the funeral.

England's Funeral Expenses Payment (administered by DWP) covers the same burial/cremation fees plus a flat rate capped at £1,000 — Scotland's flat rate of £1,327.75 is higher. Both require the applicant to be on a qualifying benefit.
Apply online at mygov.scot, by calling the freephone number 0800 182 2222, or by requesting a paper application form. Social Security Scotland aims to process most applications within 10 working days.
Paid as a lump sum directly to the funeral director (for funeral costs) or to you (for other expenses) after your application is approved. Aim to apply as soon as possible after the funeral.
